Matt finally pulled into the factory parking lot at ten after four, just as Sam’s train was approaching Baltimore. As he strode through the revolving doors of the factory’s main entrance, Sam had just disembarked and was wondering how long she would have to wait for a taxi. By the time she had caught one and was on her way to the industrial park, Matt was safely ensconced inside the factory meeting room, talking through the ins and outs of chocolate production, and the implications the strike would have on the distribution of his Bliss bar.

Fortunately Matt was out of sight when Sam arrived at the factory gates—there would only have been a scene. Not that she knew that he was there, of course. As far as she was concerned, the only people who would be at the factory were the workers, the antislavery protesters, and her film crew. To her knowledge, Matt was over a hundred miles away, in his office in Rockefeller Center, and it would have come as a shock to her had she known that he was here, in the very building she had come to film outside.

It was less of a shock to discover, when she arrived, that no one else was there. The workers were still inside working. The protesters had not yet arrived. And her film crew was nowhere to be seen. She had known something was wrong, just from her brief and erratic conversation with Paul, and now her worst fears were confirmed. If only she could borrow a phone from someone, then perhaps she’d be able to find out where he was—but she couldn’t ask anyone because she didn’t want to draw attention to herself.

Shying away from the front entrance, she walked across the parking lot and around the building to the side entrance. This was where the delivery trucks entered and left, and where, she guessed, the majority of the workers would be coming out. If Paul and the crew were going to be anywhere, then this was the place—an ideal spot to interview people before they got into their cars and drove away. But he wasn’t here.

Sam stood for a minute or two, wondering what to do next. After a while, since no one challenged her, she wandered through the gateway and into the factory courtyard. It was the only place left that she hadn’t searched.
